.SYNOPSIS…
A cold front is progressing across the southern third of Lake Michigan this morning, with northerly winds in place across the majority of the open waters. West-southwest winds continue to the south of the front over far southern Lake Michigan, but will quickly transition to northerly as the boundary departs late this morning. Northerly winds will continue into this afternoon, with the strongest readings anticipated over the southern half of the open waters. Widespread 25-30 kt gusts are forecast across this portion of Lake Michigan through early evening, with a few gusts near gale force possible. Gale Warnings won’t be necessary given the isolated and brief nature of any such gusts. Winds will quickly taper this evening as 30.5 inch high pressure drifts south along the Ontario-Quebec border.
Winds will turn southwesterly across the northern half of Lake Michigan Sunday afternoon while northeasterly winds continue to persist further south. Southerly to southeasterly winds will return to the entirety of the open waters Sunday night through Tuesday morning as 29.3 inch low pressure builds into the northern Great Plains. Brief periods of east-northeast winds are forecast during the afternoon hours on Tuesday and Wednesday as an area of 29.8 inch low pressure approaches southern Lake Michigan. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms will accompany the approaching surface low both Tuesday and Wednesday. A larger area of 29.4 inch low pressure will form in the northern Great Plains Wednesday night, approaching and ultimately crossing northern Lake Michigan Thursday through Thursday night. The low’s approach will result in increasing southeast winds across the open waters through Thursday afternoon. Gales aren’t expected at this time, though trends will be monitored in the coming forecasts. More widespread shower and thunderstorms will accompany the passing low, with the best chances being Thursday afternoon and evening..
